Tyre and wheel checks

Tyres provide the vehicle’s contact with the road. Pressure loss, sidewall damage, exposed cords, severe vibration or impact damage should be assessed promptly.

What an inspection considers

Checks may include pressure, tread and wear pattern, sidewall condition, puncture location, valve condition and visible wheel damage. Uneven wear can also point to alignment, suspension or inflation issues.

When replacement is safer

Not every puncture can be repaired safely. Damage location, size, prior repairs, tyre condition and manufacturer guidance all affect the decision.

Pressure and load matter

Use the vehicle manufacturer’s applicable pressure guidance, accounting for load and tyre specification. The maximum pressure moulded on a tyre sidewall is not normally the everyday target. Check pressure when appropriate and investigate repeated loss rather than repeatedly topping up.

Valve leakage, bead condition, wheel damage and punctures can all cause pressure loss. A visual glance cannot confirm internal tyre condition.

Vibration and balancing

Speed-related vibration can involve imbalance, tyre deformation, wheel runout, mounting condition or suspension and driveline causes. Record the speed range and whether the vibration is felt mainly through the steering wheel or body.

Balancing may improve a weight-distribution issue but will not repair a damaged tyre, bent wheel or loose suspension component.

Age, wear and repairability

Tread depth is only one condition factor. Sidewall cracking, impact damage, previous repairs, uneven wear and age also matter. A puncture repair decision should follow recognised limits and the tyre manufacturer’s guidance.
