Red, amber and flashing warnings
Red warnings commonly indicate a condition that may need immediate attention. Amber warnings usually mean a system requires checking, but serious symptoms can still make continued driving unsafe. A flashing engine warning often indicates an active fault that can cause further damage. Always compare the symbol with the vehicle handbook.
Stop for loss of oil pressure or overheating
Continuing with confirmed low oil pressure or severe overheating can cause major damage. Move to a safe location when possible, switch off the engine and arrange professional guidance or recovery. Never open a hot cooling system.
Record what happened
Photograph the warning, note the speed and operating condition, and record noises, smells, power loss or temperature changes. Do not clear codes or disconnect the battery simply to hide the lamp before diagnosis, because useful evidence may be lost.
Why a scan code is not the final answer
A stored code describes a detected condition or circuit; it does not prove that the component named in the description must be replaced. Power supply, wiring, leaks and related systems may produce the same code.
Plan the inspection
Provide the vehicle details, warning behaviour and recent repair history when booking. The workshop can then decide whether the car should be driven in or recovered.
Read the handbook and the whole instrument panel
Symbols and colours vary by manufacturer. The handbook explains the exact symbol and immediate action for that model. Look for related gauges and messages rather than focusing on one lamp; temperature, oil pressure, charging voltage or braking messages can change the urgency.
If the vehicle behaves normally and the handbook permits continued driving, avoid heavy load and arrange a timely check. If there is noise, smell, smoke, power loss or unsafe control, treat the symptoms as the stronger warning.
ABS, stability and brake warnings
An ABS or stability-control warning can mean those assistance functions are limited even if basic braking remains. A red brake warning, fluid loss, abnormal pedal or reduced stopping ability is more urgent. Do not perform repeated hard stops to test the system on public roads.
Tyre size, pressure, wheel-speed sensors, wiring and mechanical condition can influence these systems. A scan code still needs physical and electrical checks.
Battery and charging warnings
A charging warning while the engine runs can indicate that electrical supply is not being maintained. The vehicle may stop once stored battery energy is exhausted, and a belt-related problem can affect other systems on some engines. Reduce unnecessary electrical load and seek safe advice rather than assuming a new battery will solve it.
After the warning is diagnosed
Ask what caused the warning, what testing confirmed it and whether related maintenance or calibration is required. A lamp switched off by clearing memory is not a repair. The relevant system should be retested and the driver told whether further monitoring or a drive cycle is needed.
Do not hide the warning before inspection
Disconnecting the battery, clearing codes or repeatedly restarting may switch a light off temporarily while removing information that helps diagnosis. Unless the handbook or a qualified professional directs otherwise for safety, preserve the warning state and describe any change after restart. A warning that disappears can still leave stored evidence and should not be dismissed when the original symptom was serious.
Tyre-pressure and restraint warnings
A tyre-pressure warning can follow temperature change, pressure loss, a puncture, wheel work or a sensor issue. Check tyres from a safe position and follow the manufacturer’s pressure guidance; do not continue on a visibly damaged or severely underinflated tyre. Resetting the warning without correcting pressure or damage removes the reminder, not the cause.
Airbag or restraint warnings indicate that part of the occupant-protection system may not operate as intended. Seat wiring, connectors, sensors, control units and collision history can be relevant. Avoid probing pyrotechnic circuits or installing resistors to extinguish the lamp; appropriate safety procedures and diagnostic equipment are required.
Create a useful record for intermittent warnings
When safe, photograph the full instrument cluster so the symbol, message, gauges and vehicle state are captured together. Note whether the engine was cold or hot, the road condition, recent refuelling or battery work and whether the warning disappeared after restarting. This context can matter more than the colour of the lamp alone.
If several warnings appear simultaneously, mention their sequence. A shared power, communication or wheel-speed issue can produce multiple messages, while unrelated faults can also coexist. A systematic check avoids choosing one warning at random and replacing the component named by a generic code description.
